Abstract

In face of the difficulties for teaching Mathematics in Elementary Schools and based on team discussions held in meetings with Elementary School teachers, the need for a reflective work upon the teaching of Mathematics in Elementary Schools (1st through 4th grades) was established. This work started in 1988 and, despite many difficulties, mainly in regard to funds and strikes, it has been successful. The project was meant to develop a number of weekly meetings with the working team and elementary school teachers in order to promote the discussion of well-defined themes which were taken from doubts and expectations held by those teachers. Thus, a definition of a programme was made in every previous meeting, taking into account the qualitative and quantitative characteristic of the project. The idea was not to bring into the meetings ready-made recipes but to   deal   with needs the elementary school teachers might have or anticipate  them.
