Britons have been warned to 'stay away from the sea' by police as the UK was battered by 75mph winds, a three-year-old was injured by waves smashing a car window and a bin lorry driver was seen 'dicing with death'.
The drivers of a white panel van and the bin lorry were filmed negotiating huge waves swamping the Cornish coast at Portmellon this morning and found themselves in danger of being swept away.
Witness Dan Hazelton from St Austell said: 'Portmellon this morning.
Rodda's van and bin lorry dicing with death. This was actually a slight lull in the waves. They were very, very lucky.'
Meanwhile a young child was taken to hospital by ambulance after the water smashed into the rear left passenger window of the Mazda vehicle at about 4pm yesterday on Scarborough seafront in North Yorkshire.
And in Oldham, Greater Manchester, gusts close to 40mph caused a tree to fall and crush two cars today, while ten hillwalkers were rescued in a major search in Northumberland after some began to suffer from hypothermia.
