Mobile Call Usage Declines as Internet Usage Rises

por Roger Coldham (2020-04-22)

It is no surprise that the internet has taken over our daily lives ever since smartphones were invented, but without the applications that accompany the smartphone, they would never be as popular as they are. Therefore it is no surprise that internet usage on the rise, however, it is no secret that our smartphones aren't the only devices in our life that use the internet. Take home security systems, which have now transformed into home automation systems that still provide all safety features, but now also automate the various pieces of tech in our households. This has given birth to what is dubbed as the Internet of Things (IoT), which is essentially a hub similar to the wireless router that enables you to connect to the internet but it does so much more since it allows various devices to connect to one another instead of a single internet connection. These hubs allow various devices to share information and commands, which allow you to execute various functions that would normally require your physical presence such as enabling and disabling various components of your home automation system thus no longer requiring your physical presence.

We can still connect with people around the world but now we can also connect to multiple internet-enabled devices as well now. As the internet continues to get faster the cost for said internet service become more cost effective allowing more user access to connect to the internet which is the case with Charter Communications and the spectrum internet deals that they have to offer. Your mobile carrier is primary how one chooses to access their internet on the go however, unlike residential internet services the cost are higher. Due to the higher cost of internet services from your cellular provider, most users choose to use a more local source of the internet when not on the go such as residential internet due to the lower cost and unlimited data usage.

Just as more users prefer to use an alternative source of data to connect to the internet, more and more users are using the internet to communicate with one another. The minutes allocated to you on a monthly basis aren't exactly cost effective and if you happen to go over then be prepared for heavy premium tariffs for exceeding the allocated minutes. This information isn't exactly new information and your service providers know about it since they have started to offer cellular plans that cater to the internet more than they do to cellular minutes. With the availability of cost-effective high-speed internet, public Wi-Fi hotspots, smartphones, and popular communication applications such as Snapchat and Whatsapp it is clear to see why cellular usage is on the decline. It is simply more cost effective to use the internet to communicate with your friends and family when compared to your cellular services.

The Negative Impact of Smartphones

Based on the statistical data shared by Ofcom, it's clear to see that a majority of us rely on the internet a little bit more then we should. Technology is great and there is no bigger advocate for it than I, however, one thing can't be ignored and ???????? that is the negative impact of smartphones and the internet in terms of decline in social interactions. The most concerning of all is that we take our devices with us to the washrooms to occupy our time. Some become so engrossed in their devices that they spend a little more time then need in the washroom. The time old tradition of having newspapers and books in the bathroom to occupy ourselves has become a thing of the past.

Another negative impact is how we now consume meals; many of my friends, family, and coworkers decide to enjoy an episode of their favorite television shows during mealtimes, which is okay in moderation. However, there are those that focus on their device while out and about in a social gathering instead of conversing with one another. I recall snatching devices away from those that do which at times leads to causing a scene that just sours the atmosphere altogether. I would rather have an argument as a form of social interaction then have none at all with someone who has become zombified by their devices.

The Ying and Yang of Smartphones

There is no denying the fact that you cannot have the good without the bad and if you think about it the theory applies to everything in life. For those that are in a relationship you simply cannot have all the good without getting some of the bad and the same applies to nearly every other scenario that I can think about especially the balance of good and evil. There is no denying that the evolution of the internet and smartphone have greatly improved our efficiency, however, that does not apply to everyone. There are those that completely become nonproductive when an internet-enabled device is at their fingertips. We have to remember that we all were raised right and taught to implement the best practice possible in order to be successful and thus the same applies to technology and the internet that allow us to connect with one another.
