PSG given formal warning for 'unsportsmanlike conduct' in Dortmund win

por Willie Knott (2020-04-15)

UEFA have dished out a formal warning to PSG for 'unsportsmanlike conduct' during their Champions League last-16 second-leg victory over Borussia Dortmund on March 11.

The match, which took place inside an empty Parc des Princes, saw PSG emerge 2-0 winners and progress to the quarter-finals in what was a heated affair.

It is not clear whether the warning is for Neymar and PSG's mocking of Dortmund striker Erling Haaland during and after the game or for the fracas that emerged late on during which Dortmund midfielder Emre Can was sent off in the 89th minute.

A UEFA press release confirmed the warning is in reference to the fiery encounter, though it did not specify which incident in particular.

However, the Parisians will not face any repercussions for their behaviour, ??????? nor a fine as they await the outcome of talks over the rest of the season amid the coronavirus outbreak.

After Neymar scored the opening goal on March 11, he sprinted over to the touchline and then imitated 19-year-old Haaland's celebration, which the Norwegian used twice after his brace in the first-leg.

It is thought the Ligue 1 champions were riled by a snapchat which emerged of Haaland saying 'My city, not yours' in reference to Paris, though it is not clear whether the picture is fake or not.

After the match, all of PSG's players goaded Haaland by sitting down in the meditative pose and repeating their antics in the changing room.

Alternatively, the warning could be in reference to the confrontation between both sets of players in the 89th minute, which led to Emre Can being sent off.

The German fouled Neymar by the touchline and the pair squared off, resulting in players from both teams sprinting over which only exacerbated the situation.

PSG do not yet know their quarter-final opponents, as teams await talks on how the rest of the season will be scheduled due to the outbreak of COVID-19 which has halted action across Europe.
