PPGEL Master’s and Doctoral (PhD) Degrees Requirements
The Graduate Program in Language Studies –PPGEL includes the Master’s Degree Course and the Doctoral (PhD) Degree Course. Graduates from any area of knowledge can apply to the Program.
The Master’s Degree Course offered by PPGEL has the minimum duration of 1 (one) year and the maximum of 2 (two) years. The student must earn 58 (fifty-eight) credits, corresponding to 870 (eight hundred and seventy) hours distributed as follows:
5 (five) credit hours form mandatory/required disciplines in the student’s area of concentration;
18 (eighteen) credit hours from optional disciplines out of which at least 12 (twelve) in the student’s area of concentration;
5 (five) credit hours in special activities;
30 (thirty) credit hours from the writing of the Master’s Dissertation.
The Master’s Degree student must also be submitted to:
a Qualifying examination; and
b Dissertation defense.
The PhD Degree Course lasts at least 02 (two) years and a maximum of 04 (four years). Students is required to earn 159 (one hundred and fifty-nine) credit hours, corresponding to 2.385 (two thousand three hundred and eighty-five) hours distributed as follows:
2 (two) credits from mandatory/required disciplines in the student’s area of concentration;
7 (seven) credits from mandatory/required Special Activities;
30 (thirty) credits from optional disciplines out of which 21 (twenty-one) must be in the student’s concentration area; and
120 (one hundred and twenty) credit hours from the writing of his/her PhD thesis
The PhD student must still be submitted to:
a Qualifying Exam;
b Thesis Defense, and a
(*) Teaching Practicum, in case of a scholarship holder.
CREDIT VALIDATION FOR THE PhD DEGREE:
For the PhD Degree, the following applies:
Up to 18 (eighteen) credits issued by a nationally recognized and accredited Master’s Degree program, provided they have been approved by the Program’s Coordinating Committee. With these credits validated, students must earn at least 09 (nine) credits in his/her area of concentration;
Up to 03 (three) credits issued by nationally and CAPES accredited Graduate Programs, provided they have been approved by the advisor and the Program’s Coordinating Committee;
Up to 06 (six) credits earned as a UEL Graduate Program in Language Studies Special Student;
Note: CAPES/MEC scholarship holders must still earn 02 (two) credits referred to the Undergraduate Teaching Practicum for the Master’s Degree and 04 credits for the PhD Degree.

The foreign languages (English, French and Spanish) required by the PPGEL- Graduate Program in Language Studies were chosen based on the reading needs of the students during the course and the bibliography recommended by the disciplines, respecting the Central Library collection of journals.
Special Activities are connected to the students’ academic production, as a regular student, and they can be validated as follows:
SPECIAL ACTIVITIES
They include participation in events, publication of articles and paper presentations as described in each student’s resolution (to access, click here). To transfer credits from these disciplines, the student must fill out a request form at the PPGEL Secretary’s Office, using a standard form (available here) and attach comprobatory documents related to these activities.
For each course, the student must take the Special Activities according to the table below:
Master’s Degree Program (five credit hours required):

Advanced Studies disciplines are usually given by visiting professors on themes related to the program’s research lines to strengthen the connection between researchers and students from each research line.
