STUDY AT UEL
UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE
THANKS for your interest in our university. The State University of Londrina is strongly committed to social, economic, cultural and environmental sustainability, with a highly qualitied Faculty (more than 90% of the 1.650 teachers with postgraduate titles or postdoctoral studies) and administrative staff (3.433). According to the QS University Ranking BRICS 2016, UEL reached the 1st position in Paraná and the 5th place among the Brazilian state funded universities.
Undergraduate students applying to study at our university are strongly recommended to have some knowledge of the Portuguese language, since our courses are offered in that language.
Our academic year usually runs from March to December; however, for 2020 our dates are as follows:
First semester: March 02 – July 11
Second semester: August 03 – December 09
Some courses last for a semester (1S for first semester - february/july and 2S for second semesetre - august/january) and others for an entire year (named by letter "A"), i.e. two consecutive semesters. Check the course offerings at the relevant website of your intended course.
Interested applicants must submit their proposals by October 30 of the previous year for the first semester and May 29 for the second semester.
Application process
Students interested in applying for an exchange at the State University of Londrina (UEL), first have to contact the International Relations Office of their home institution and ask there for information, since each partner university has its own pre-selection process with specific pre-requisites and timing.
The person responsible for their outbound mobility will also sign the form. In addition to the form, the candidates have to submit a letter stating the reasons for carrying out the exchange at UEL, in Portuguese, and attach a copy of an ID document and an updated student record transcript (with a Portuguese translation). All of these documents have to be scanned and emailed to mobilidade@uel.br so they can be approved by the respective Course Coordinator, at least 60 days in advance of the beginning of the semester.
A confirmation message will be sent to all accepted exchange students and an acceptance letter will be sent to accepted exchange students applying for visa.
When you arrive
When you arrive at UEL contact immediately the Mobility Office at International Relations Office, located beside the banks and near the Central Library. For enrollment purposes you will need to provide:
1 3x4 photo
Student visa (visa IV)
International life insurance (personal accident, death and repatriation) for the entire period of the exchange
A copy of your birth certificate and proof of residence (a statement from your host may be sufficient).
Registration at the Federal Police
All foreign students are required to register with the Federal Police to obtain their local ID. Detailed instructions (in Portuguese) can be found at http://www.pf.gov.br/servicos-pf/imigracao/cedula-de-identidade-de-estrangeiro. Please check in advance the documents you will have to bring to apply for the ID.
Opening a bank account
In some cases students will be required to open a bank account. Scholarship recipients usually have to open a bank account at Banco do Brasil. In Londrina, there are several branches of the bank. Check their website http://www.bb.com.br/pbb/pagina-inicial/atendimento#/.
Accommodation and meals
The State University of Londrina does not provide student housing nor is responsible for the information available on this website. However, we can give you a list of alternative accomodation in Londrina (rentals, etc.) available through other organisations working in the real estate market or “pensões” (or guest houses), which can be a good option, especially if you are planning to stay for only a few months. There are several affordable possibilities very close to the university campus, with rents varying from R$ 300,00 to R$ 1.000,00 per month (average US$ 75 to US$ 250, April, 2016).
You can have affordable meals at the University Restaurant (Restaurante Universitário). As a student you are entitled to a pass that guarantees a very low rate (about US$ 1 each meal).
Library
The Exchange students or international students and researchers in general can obtain permission to use the library services by presenting a proof of their affiliation with UEL (a formal letter from the Head of Department or Course/Project coordinator, photo ID and updated proof of residence).
Transportation
Since 2015 university students can have free passes in local buses, which can be requested at one of the service provider offices, with the following documents: proof of enrolment, passport, proof of residence. Full time students can have 4 bus passes a day and part-time students can have 2 bus passes a day, depending on their financial standing (subject to interview from CMTU).
Portuguese
Although it is expected that you have some knowledge of Portuguese, we offer Portuguese to Speakers of Other Languages (PFOL) classes at the Language Laboratory. These 60 hour courses are paid and the calendar can be consulted at http://www.uel.br/cch/lablinguas/
